Some AI files have no PDF content at all. On the other hand, PSD files can store vector graphics quite well, and Affinity Designer can open them quite well. All you need to do is to turn the AI file into a PSD somehow. replace.me can convert AI and other formats into PSD. Press File - Open, choose an AI file, and press File - Save as PSD.
